It’s a delicate dance to be accurate and descriptive but to always remember that he’s dealing with actual human beings. Morrison is also known for his soothing voice and ability to describe in great and almost poetic detail the most gruesome of crime scenes. “It’s more of an ‘I think I better understand what that might be and what kind of behaviors I have to watch out for,’ especially when so much of the bad stuff that happens to us occurs at the hands of people who we thought were our intimates.” “Human beings have always been interested, almost from an evolutionary standpoint, about ‘What goes bump in the night around me?’” he said. He said the reception still surprises him since “people rise in their seats like it’s the Rolling Stones or something … it’s weird.”īut Morrison understands the interest in the topic. He joined NBC News two years later and in 1995 was hired as a correspondent on “Dateline.” Now, at 74, Morrison is treated like a rock star at things like CrimeCon, an annual convention for true crime enthusiasts, authors, podcasts and more. Morrison began his career at local TV stations in his native Canada before moving to Los Angeles to join Southern California’s KNBC in 1986. There was also a bit of a surge during the pandemic as shows like “Crime Scene: The Vanishing at the Cecil Hotel” and “Why Did You Kill Me” were popular on Netflix and true crime podcasts continued to thrive in the months of lockdown. Morrison attributes its recent uptick in popularity to the rise of social media as well as the proliferation of internet sleuths sharing information online in real-time. The current fascination with true crime is nothing new. “So in the end, how much did they get away with that we still don’t know all about?” “Then they added to their profitability by trying to do a bunch of other things that were clearly against the law,” he said. Morrison said in his many years of working in the realm of true crime, he’s learned that not all villains “are like in the cartoons, scurrying around, twirling his mustache with an evil grin, plotting what he could to take advantage of in the situation.” The two women in this case were “kindly old ladies” for whom fraud and murder was “easy as pie,” he says. It’s terrible blight on what is the richest country on the planet.” What this story also shows is that we have a big problem with homelessness, a very big problem. “He figured there had to be something in exchange for what they’d offered. “Jimmy smelled a rat, I guess, but he was one of those people who understood that it’s wise to look a gift horse in the mouth,” Morrison said. There’s also Jimmy Covington, a homeless man that Morrison describes as having “movie star looks,” who ultimately declined the women’s offer for free food and rent, although that didn’t stop them from taking out a life insurance policy on him as well. While this case has been covered on shows like “Dateline,” “Deadly Women,” “Wicked Attraction” as well as being loosely worked into the storyline of a 2009 “CSI:NY” episode starring Kim Kardashian and Vanessa Lachey, Morrison said that there are things in the podcast that haven’t been shared before.įor instance, Morrison dives into how investigator Ed Webster followed the money, a move that ultimately helped uncover a motive for the murders. His new six-episode podcast “The Thing about Helen & Olga” - which comes on the heels of the successful six-episode “The Thing About Pam” podcast in 2019 - will be available starting Tuesday, Nov. That’s why Morrison said he’s thrilled to have the opportunity to host Dateline NBC podcasts, which allow him to go more in-depth with his reporting and further introduce listeners to key players in these standout cases. They’re the stories that warrant more attention and explanation and can’t be wrapped up in a one- or even two-hour television segment. “I remember a lot of them intimately, and only a few do I sort of forget.”īut there are some he wanted more time and space to explore. “Every story is my favorite story while I’m working on it,” Morrison said during a recent phone interview from his Laguna Beach home. Keith Morrison, longtime broadcast journalist and award-winning “Dateline” correspondent, has reported thousands of stories in his career, and he doesn’t play favorites with them. Inbetween encounters, the trio runs around killing a lot of orcs, undead, and trolls, among other things. You have to defeat Agandaur, but when you’re about to beat him, he runs away and you have to go find him in another castle. Despite a deceivingly large amount of dialogue and cutscenes, the plot of War in the North is pretty much an R-rated version of Super Mario Bros. War in the North adds nothing to Lord of the Rings. Shadows of the Empire, which stars a Han Solo rippoff named Dash Rendar and largely takes place between The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi, has a complex and interesting plot that adds layers of depth to the Star Wars trilogy. By defeating him, they can help Frodo on his quest to destroy the Ring.Īnd that’s pretty much the whole story. Their mission is to defeat Agandaur, a new villain that is of the same descent as the Mouth of Sauron and is one of the dark lord’s top lieutenants. Apparently, these races form trios all the time. For proof, look no further than the game’s three main characters: Eradon, a Dunadan Ranger like Aragorn Andriel, a female version of Legolas and Farin, a dwarf that looks just like Gimli. Instead, it’s an attempt to recreate Lord of the Rings without repeating the same old story we’ve been through in previous games. Yet all that has been averted because a handful of heroes stood in his path.” But beyond the general nature of the quote, so far as I can tell, none of the new specific story elements in this game appear in any Tolkien book, meaning nothing here is cannon at all. The game is based on a single quote from Gandalf the White taken from the books that says, “With his far reaching right hand Sauron might have done great evil in the North. Much like the classic Star Wars: Shadows of the Empire (N64), War in the North is an attempt to breathe new life into the Lord of the Rings films by weaving a secondary tale into the fabric of Peter Jackson’s trilogy. But it does have some light RPG elements and they’re implemented fairly well. Don’t buy this game because you heard its an RPG. It is fun to play through early areas after you’ve leveled up though–the orcs die so quickly. Leveling up and equipment changes are also a part of the mix, but neither affect gameplay much. The elf is the most different but only because she can cast a nice healing bubble spell. They all have the same basic ranged and melee attacks. Actually, after playing all three character classes, I can say that there is almost no difference between a ranger, an elf mage, and a dwarf champion. There are three playable character classes and some RPG elements here, but they’re mostly negligible. To kill him, you fight him like an enemy in World of Warcraft: just keep beating him until he awkwardly collapses. A troll in War of the North simply drops into the arena and awkwardly starts fighting people. Defeating the troll required precise timing and was truly frightening. Unlike War in the North, each boss and enemy in RE4 required its own unique strategy and had its own learning curve. When I was battling a giant troll in the game, I remembered fighting similar creatures in Resident Evil 4. There are a few powerups and other controls mapped to different keys, but these are your core controls. For far away enemies, hold the left trigger to go into first-person POV and aim your bow or magic staff. To finish him off, use Y for a slow and powerful final blow. Just tap that baby over and over until your enemy is almost dead. Other than moving, you’ll pretty much be hitting the X button (on the 360), which attacks. Moving and the camera are controlled by the left and right control sticks. You can play by yourself or with one friend via splitscreen, but the computer will control any characters you don’t, and it’s not always great at knowing what to do…or how to kill. Like the old Gauntlet games, it’s best played simultaneously, in this case with three people. Does the approach work? Well, kind of.Īt its core, War in the North is a cooperative multiplayer hack and slash game. More importantly though, it’s an attempt to bring back cooperative hack and slash gameplay with the added value of some light RPG and story elements. The Lord of the Rings: War in the North is an attempt to stretch out the fabric of Peter Jackson’s film trilogy by fabricating a massive, concurrent side quest onto it. Luckily, the series has a timeless feel to it and with the first half of a massive two-part Hobbit film headed for release in late 2012, the franchise is already beginning to heat up again. It helped redefine the fantasy genre, and it’s hard to believe that The Fellowship of the Ring is 10 years old now. Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings trilogy may be the best book-to-movie adaptations ever made. Instead, you are simply hand-holding the map and must use the key to zoom in and then move around it. With a map out, you have to hit a key to zoom in, but that doesn’t cause it to fill the screen. Even as someone who’s comfortable with finding the right path to take, I did find the process to be a little tedious in Firewatch. The game doesn’t do too much hand-holding to help you find out where you should go next instead, you are given a detailed map as well as a compass. That’s one thing that helps with immersion the conversations more often than not sound completely natural, with minor mannerisms most voice-actors don’t seem to nail down in video games being nailed-down here.įor much of the game, Delilah sends you from point A to point B to figure something out. That’s not ideal, but something that helps make up for it is the fact that the voice-acting is simply superb. It doesn’t matter whether you try to keep conversations with Delilah on a positive note or a sour one – the game and goals are accomplished just the same. While I enjoyed hearing different lines the second go around (and in some cases learning even more about certain things), I found it a little disappointing that the chat options are unimportant. After completing the PlayStation 4 version, I moved over to the PC version to have a second go-through this time choosing different chat options to see how things would differ. The next night, I finished it not once, but twice. I went to sleep that night thinking about the game, trying to piece what I learned up to that point together. But, after a two-hour game session and bedtime looming, it was difficult to pull myself away. Much of the game revolves around conversations between you and Delilah there’s small talk and heart-pouring conversations, as well as panicked back-and-forths, as you both work to deal with problems that permeate through the park.Īs someone who could take or leave the story in most games, I admit that 10 minutes into Firewatch, I didn’t think I’d enjoy it. If you prefer game dialog to be kept to a minimum, Firewatch might be worth avoiding. From her perch, Delilah can monitor all of the lookouts in the region, but ultimately, it’s yours – and you in particular – that she seems most interested in. She sits in a watchtower of sorts that’s visible from most areas of the game. Minutes into the game, you’ll be introduced to your supervisor, Delilah, who you get you know pretty well over the course of your adventure.
